History

The d?artement of Vienne was formed in 1790 from parts of the former provinces of Poitou, Touraine, and Berry.

Geography

Vienne is bounded by the d?artements of Indre-et-Loire on the north and northeast, Indre on the east, Haute-Vienne on the southeast, Charente on the south, Deux-S?res on the west, and Maine-et-Loire on the northwest.

The principal rivers are the Vienne and the Charente.
