Plein air

Plein air is French for 'outdoors' or 'outside', and is a term applied to painting outside. Though artists have always sketched and studied outside - landscape sketches survive from Albrecht D?er and many Italian Renaissance artists - many 19th-century artists began working outside as a way of overcoming the constraints of work in the studio from sketches.
