• Many trees and shrubs are called Laurel, the original being Laurus nobilis, the True or Bay laurel that is the source of bay leaves used as a seasoning; see Bay laurel (Family Lauraceae). The laurel, 'Crown of Caesar' is Ruscus hypoglossum (Family Liliaceae); the laurel wreaths used as trophies in Greek athletic contests were from the Bay laurel. The Laurel (shrub) in horticulture is usually Prunus laurocerasus (Family Rosaceae).
