John Carroll

John Carroll (

1735 -
December 3,
1815) was born in
Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He joined the
Jesuits in
1753 and was ordained a
priest in
1761. He was appointed the first bishop in the
United States on
November 6,
1789 and the first
Roman Catholic archbishop in the US in
1808.
John Carroll University is named in his honor.
