Jafar

Jafar is a fictional character in Disney films. He is a sinister magician and the former Grand Vizier of the Sultan of Agraba. The character is vagely based on the Jafar or Giafar in tales of the Arabian Nights, which character was in turn based on a real-life official of Harun al-Rashid.

He appeared in the film Aladdin, its sequel The Return of Jafar and occasionally in the Aladdin animated series.

The villain in the 1989 computer game Prince of Persia is also a vizier, but spelled "Jaffar" instead.

The name Jafar means stream, and was also the name of the brother of the 4th caliph.
