Academic organizations typically have a rather rigid set of ranks. Within the United States the hierarchy of ranks are

• Full Professor
• Associate Professor
• Assistant Professor
• Post-doctoral fellow
• Graduate student, which include teaching assistants and research assistants
• Undergraduate

There is a parallel system of administrative ranks

• President
• Dean
• Department head
